Spring Planting Guide for Staffordshire Gardens
Published February 2026
Spring is an exciting time in the garden. As the days lengthen and temperatures rise, it is time to get planting. Here is our guide to making the most of the spring season in Staffordshire.
When to Start Planting
In Staffordshire, the last frosts typically occur in late April or early May. However, you can start preparing your garden much earlier. Hardy plants can go in from March onwards, while tender bedding should wait until after the last frost.
What to Plant in March
Early spring is perfect for planting bare-root trees and shrubs, as they are still dormant. This is also a great time to plant:
- Hardy perennials like Hellebores and Pulmonaria
- Summer-flowering bulbs such as Dahlias and Gladioli
- Fruit bushes and canes
- Roses (both bare-root and container-grown)
April Planting
As the soil warms up, you can start planting a wider range:
- Evergreen shrubs and hedging plants
- Hardy annuals sown directly outdoors
- Early vegetables like broad beans and peas
- Herbs such as parsley, chives, and mint
May and Beyond
Once the risk of frost has passed, typically mid-May in Staffordshire, you can plant out tender bedding plants, hanging baskets, and summer containers. This is also the time for:
- Tomatoes and other tender vegetables
- Tropical-looking plants like Cannas and Bananas
- Summer bedding for instant colour
Soil Preparation Tips
Staffordshire soil can be heavy clay in some areas. Before planting, work in plenty of organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure to improve drainage and structure. Our team can recommend the best soil improvers for your specific conditions.
