Shady spots in the garden can feel challenging, but with the right plant choices, they can become some of the most beautiful areas. Here are our top recommendations for transforming those darker corners.

Understanding Your Shade

Not all shade is equal. Before choosing plants, work out what type of shade you have:

  • Dappled shade - Light filtered through tree canopies. The widest range of plants will grow here.
  • Partial shade - A few hours of direct sun, then shade. Many flowering plants thrive here.
  • Full shade - No direct sunlight. Choose foliage plants and true shade lovers.
  • Dry shade - Under trees or against walls where rain does not reach. The trickiest spot, but still plantable.

Top Shrubs for Shade

These reliable shrubs bring structure and year-round interest:

  • Hydrangea - Stunning flowers in summer, prefer partial shade
  • Camellia - Elegant evergreen with winter/spring flowers
  • Aucuba japonica - Tough evergreen with spotted leaves, tolerates deep shade
  • Fatsia japonica - Bold architectural leaves, very shade tolerant
  • Sarcococca (Sweet Box) - Fragrant winter flowers in deep shade
  • Mahonia - Yellow winter flowers, architectural foliage

Perennials for Shady Borders

Add colour and interest with these shade-loving perennials:

  • Hostas - The ultimate foliage plant, huge variety of leaf colours and sizes
  • Ferns - Elegant fronds, perfect for woodland feel
  • Heuchera - Colourful foliage in purples, greens, and silvers
  • Hellebores - Winter and early spring flowers when little else is blooming
  • Astilbe - Feathery flower plumes in summer
  • Brunnera - Heart-shaped leaves and blue forget-me-not flowers

Ground Cover for Shade

Carpet those difficult areas with these spreading plants:

  • Vinca (Periwinkle) - Blue flowers, spreads well
  • Pachysandra - Evergreen, tolerates dry shade
  • Epimedium - Delicate flowers, tough as old boots
  • Ajuga (Bugle) - Colourful leaves, blue flower spikes

Tips for Success

To help shade plants thrive:

  • Improve soil with organic matter before planting
  • Water well in the first year, especially under trees
  • Mulch annually to retain moisture
  • Consider raising the canopy of trees to let in more light
