Potted plants ready for container gardening

Container gardening is perfect for patios, balconies, or adding interest to any outdoor space. Whether you have a tiny courtyard or a sprawling garden, pots and containers offer endless possibilities.

Choosing the Right Containers

Almost anything can be a container as long as it has drainage holes. Popular options include:

  • Terracotta pots - Classic and attractive, but dry out quickly
  • Plastic containers - Lightweight and retain moisture well
  • Wooden planters - Natural look, good insulation
  • Metal containers - Modern aesthetic, can get hot in summer

Whatever you choose, make sure there are adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

The Right Compost

Do not use garden soil in containers - it compacts and drains poorly. Instead, use a good quality multi-purpose compost. For permanent plantings like shrubs or trees, use a loam-based compost like John Innes No. 3.

What to Plant

Almost any plant can grow in a container if you choose the right size pot. Great choices for beginners include:

  • Herbs - Basil, rosemary, thyme, and mint thrive in pots
  • Bedding plants - Petunias, geraniums, and begonias for colour
  • Shrubs - Compact varieties of Hydrangea, Lavender, and Box
  • Grasses - Add movement and texture
  • Vegetables - Tomatoes, peppers, and salad leaves

The Thriller, Filler, Spiller Method

For attractive mixed containers, use this simple formula:

  • Thriller - A tall, eye-catching plant in the centre
  • Filler - Medium-height plants around the thriller
  • Spiller - Trailing plants that cascade over the edges

Watering and Feeding

Containers dry out faster than garden beds, especially in summer. Check daily and water when the top inch of compost feels dry. Feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser during the growing season - we recommend a balanced feed every two weeks.

Year-Round Interest

Containers do not have to be just for summer. Plant spring bulbs for early colour, evergreen shrubs for winter structure, and cyclamen or pansies for autumn and winter flowers.
